A Robert Burns dinner is returning to Cook County on January 21, 2017, at Cascade Restaurant. This is a celebration of Scottish poet and songwriter Robert Burns’ birthday, which is on January 25. The program will feature a full course dinner, a piper, poetry readings by professional actors, and a sing-along.
Robert Burns is a poet who is considered a Scottish national hero and is known throughout the world. He was born on January 25, 1759, and died on July 21, 1796. Burns’ birthday is celebrated in many countries. He remains popular to this day because he is considered a writer of the people and used everyday Scottish language in his poetry and songs.
The celebration follows a traditional format where the haggis is piped in, toasts are made, Burns’ poetry is recited, and participants sing some of Burns’ most famous songs such as “Auld Lang Syne” and “A Red, Red Rose.”
There is a Happy Hour from 6-7 p.m. with music and a tartan weaving demonstration with dinner and program starting at 7 p.m.
