The University of Minnesota press has announced its fall 2020 list of publications and among them is an illustrated art biography of Hazel Belvo.
In the short review of the book, the Minnesota Press noted, “Belvo’s art ranges from delicate, sensual pencil drawings to expressionistic paintings, most notably the Spirit Tree, an iconic cedar sacred to the Ojibwe along the North Shore of Lake Superior. In the first book-length study of this ground breaking feminist and artist, art historian Julie L’Enfant reviews Belvo’s focus on nature, spirituality, mythology, and eroticism during more than 40 years of making and teaching art in Minnesota.”
Hazel was married to the late Wah Wah Teh Go Nay Ga (George Morrison) world famous artist and college teacher. The two had a home and art studio in Grand Portage on the shore of Lake Superior they called Red Rock. Their son, Briand Morrison is a well-known Minnesota jazz guitarist.
Titled Hazel Belvo, A Matriarch of Art, this 300 page book features 75 black and white illustrations and 200 color plates of Hazel’s art work. It is due out in November.
