After Jes Rodne pegged 14, all her partner Jeremy Wagner had to do was have any points in his hand to win the game and play one more game to see who would be crowned champions of the Bob Pratt Scholarship Cribbage tournament.

Sadly, Jeremy came up empty—which is almost unheard of—in his hand, and the father and son team of Richard and Richie Furlong took home the $300 first-place winnings and a shiny trophy to boot!

As for Jes and Jeremy, they were third last year and Richard and Ritchie placed second last year to Bev Pratt and Skip Joynes, who were knocked out early this year.

The double-elimination tournament was held at Birch Terrace on Sunday, April 23.

All told, 32 teams entered, a full house, although one team didn’t show.

Good sports throughout; Richard and Richie Furlong didn’t lose a game in the tourney. As for Jes and Jeremy, they split $200 and had a lot of laughs along the way. James and Sarah Groth finished in third place, taking home $100.

Overall the big winner was the Bob Pratt Scholarship fund. Proceeds from the tournament go to local scholarships.

“The Bob Pratt Scholarship Cribbage Tournament Fundraiser was a huge success and a lot of fun!” said Julie Joynes Carlson, event organizer.

The Bob Pratt scholarship

This scholarship is only open to Cook County residents and is aimed at folks who want to gain a new skill or certification to help them get a job or advance in a career.

The scholarships are for any skill or training that takes less than two years to achieve.

Because the scholarships are not tied to an academic schedule, applications will be reviewed every two months.

Some examples of training these funds could be applied to are truck driver licenses, forklift certification, real estate, training to become a barber, etc.
