No one from the public attended the June 5 Cook County Board of Appeals & Equalization meeting, but that didn’t mean the Assessor’s Office wasn’t busy preparing for the evening.
Before the gathering took place Monday night the Assessor’s Office received 63 appeals, of those, 53 parcel valuations were reduced, four parcel evaluations were increased, four stayed the same and four parcels received a change in class.
The county board, which was in attendance at the meeting, approved all of the appeals and changes presented by the Assessor’s Office.
Cook County Assessor Todd Smith presented a summary of his office’s work over the past year. Topping the list of accomplishments was revaluating the Gunflint and Greenwood Districts. All told, a little more than $13 million in construction, new buildings and older buildings that had not made it on the tax rolls, was added to the county’s base value.
Smith broke down the various classes of taxable property in the county: 50 percent is seasonal recreation properties, which includes vacant land; 33 percent is residential property, which also includes vacant land; 4.4 percent is commercial/industrial; 2.18 percent seasonal resorts; .4 percent apartments; and 10.38 percent all others.
