Bluefin Bay staffer arrested after crashing into building

Cook County Law Enforcement received two calls reporting a vehicle crash at Bluefin Bay on Lake Superior on Wednesday, June 22. The first call was from Como Oil & Propane at 10:04 p.m. asking law enforcement for assistance in case Highway 61 needed to be shut down because a propane tank had been hit. A second call followed shortly after, from Bluefin Bay staff reporting that one of Bluefin’s employees had crashed a vehicle into the check-in building.

State Patrol Officer Leah Carpenter responded and determined that there were no “utility issues” with the propane tank and no one was injured in the crash.

Trooper Carpenter also determined that it was the same person who hit both the propane tank and the building. It appeared that David William Nichols, 20, of St. Paul first drove a Bluefin Bay van into the ditch and then entered another company vehicle and crashed into the guest services building.

Nichols was arrested and charged with third degree test refusal and under 21 drinking and driving. He was later transported to Duluth for medical treatment related to alcohol use.
