“Bird Detectives” walk at Lutsen SNA is June 22

Who are the summer bird residents of the maple forest at the Lutsen scientific and natural areas (SNA)?

Few birds are year round residents; most spend their winters to the south. What is their story?

There’s a lot of nesting and breeding going on at this point in the summer. Who mates for life, and who’s a two-timer? There’s a lot more going on in the forest than first meets the eye. Let’s explore and find out what’s happening in the bird world of Lutsen SNA.

Plan to meet in the parking lot of the Mountain Inn on Ski Hill Road on Friday, June 22 at 7:30 a.m. The walk will end around 10 a.m. Be prepared for about a half hour hike into the SNA through an unmowed trail that can be a bit damp in places. Bring water and snacks as needed, and be prepared for the insect inhabitants of the forest including mosquitos, ticks, and black flies! Tis the season! This event is free and is sponsored by Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association.

Sugarloaf Cove is located at milepost 73 on Minnesota Highway 61, about 70 miles north of Duluth and 6 miles south of Schroeder.

When traveling north from Duluth along Highway 61, look for mile marker 73 and a brown “Sugarloaf Cove” sign on your right. Turn into the driveway, park in the lot and you can begin your interpretive trail walk from the parking area. Just grab a trail guide from the mailbox and start walking.
