A fun tradition at Birch Grove Community School is ringing in the new school year. Every student gets to ring the heavy iron bell. Little Rolan was all smiles when it was his turn.

Birch Grove Community School (BGCS) Director Diane Blanchette reports that the 2015-2016 school year is off to a spectacular start. “This is by far the best start to a school year that I can recall,” said Blanchette. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the staff – they are of the highest quality. Their commitment, experience, knowledge, skills, and caring personalities were evident the moment the first child came through the front door. I am so proud of our returning and new staff – this team is hard to beat!”

Student enrollment increased from 18 at the end of last year to 23 this year for kindergarten through 5th grade and enrollment for the Saplings program, ages 3-5, has also increased. “I hope that this is an indicator that the school can anticipate higher enrollment numbers in the future. This is good news.”

While increased enrollment will positively impact the budget, the school still needs the support of the West End townships. “It is our hope that the town citizens and supervisors of all three townships see the value of having an elementary school in our community. Birch Grove School has a rich history going back to 1894 and the community has always been supportive. If the history of accomplishment and cooperation is unknown to you, speak to the ‘long-time’ residents.

“If you have no history with Birch Grove School, initiate contact today!” Blanchette added. “Be a part of the continuing history.”

Blanchette also shared some interesting news. She has resigned as director of the school, a position she has held since 2004.

Caroline Wood, formerly the director of the Birch Grove Foundation, which manages the building that houses the school and the community center, has accepted the position of director for Birch Grove Community School.

Blanchette said, “Birch Grove School has been a big part of my life for the last 15 years and I have invested much. I have truly enjoyed my time with all of the many students, staff, families and school board members over the years. Birch Grove will forever have a place in my heart.

“I have been ready to start a new chapter in my life that includes resigning my position to one that I have the utmost confidence in. Leaving the school is much easier knowing that Caroline Wood will become the new school director.

“Caroline will be an incredible asset to our school and I trust that she will lead the school to new heights. I have the utmost faith in Caroline’s abilities. I have been persistent in making her a part of the BGCS team for quite some time, as I believe that she will be an effective leader. I know that the school and community will be very welcoming as she adjusts to her new position. Welcome, Caroline!

“Thank you, Birch Grove Community School for all that you have given me. My parting wish is that the West End unites not only behind Birch Grove Community School, but that it becomes actively involved in increasing the quality of life in our community,” said Blanchette.
