Birch Grove Community School recognized for “excellence in governance”

Birch Grove Community School (BGCS) in Tofte recently learned that it has received the 2015 “Award of Excellence In School Board Governance” 2015 from its charter school sponsor the Volunteers of American, Minnesota.

Former director of Birch Grove Community School and current board member Diane Blanchette explained that there were 12 criteria used to judge the extent to which the school met the elements of governance.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the school board members, past and present, for all of their hard work and dedication to our students, school and community. This is a hard working school board,” said Blanchette.

In March, BGCS expanded its school board from a seven-member board to a nine-member board. Sarena Nelson and Diane Blanchette were appointed as the newest members of the board.

“The more members, the better, I think. More members add new energy, experience, skills, ideas and resources to our board. The bottom line is, it is better for our school,” said Blanchette.

Blanchette will vacate her seat in October after ensuring that the school year is off to a good start. Anyone interested in this filling this seat should contact the school at (218) 663-0170.

“We welcome those interested in seeing Birch Grove Community School remain a stellar school!” said Blanchette.
