I have to agree with the letter from Gail Semer of Traverse City, MI on September 8 regarding the proposed biomass power plant and its devastating effects on the environment and the people’s health. Haven’t we learned from the past?
The school tried a wood-chip burning fuel source that had to be abandoned due to an increase in respiratory problems with the children at school, and more recently, the burn pile had to be moved more than 10 miles out of town to end the air pollution from the smoke it created and was compromising the respiratory function of many of the elderly and care center residents.
Many of us living in town have experienced the smoke-thick air during the summer evenings when the tourist park residents are burning their campfires and of course there are the occasional forest fires.
Why on earth would anyone in Grand Marais want this type of energy source? In the long run, it will not be a cheap source of energy when one factors in all the ramifications.
