Yum, blueberries are ripe and the picking is good. But before you place that giant blueberry you picked into that delicious blueberry pie you are making, the one you are thinking of donating to the newspaper, you might want to first enter it in the Biggest Blueberry Contest.

For the second straight year merchants and resorts along the Gunflint Trail have gotten together and decided to award prizes to those dedicated blueberry pickers who seek, find and pluck the largest, plumpest blueberries in the Northland.

To select the weekly winners, blueberries will be measured by weight and must be picked fresh and not bought in a store.

The weekly contest will have three rounds, with prize drawings held the last day of each round. The first round ends July 28, with the second round beginning July 27 and ending August 4. The third round runs from August 3 to 11.

Weigh stations will be designated at various locations on the Gunflint Trail.

In addition to prizes for the biggest blueberry, all submissions will be entered to win prize drawings. Prizes range from free canoe rentals to slices of blueberry pie.
