Big Water Jewelry & Gifts in Lutsen has a lot to like and a lot to offer. The display cases each have a different theme. The art on the walls and displays laid out on tables are elegant and interesting. It’s a fun store to peruse and shop, and owner/operator

Kathryn Hatopp has a wealth of information to share if you have any questions.

Kathryn has spent more than 30 years in the jewelry, antique, and collecting art business. “I am a third-generation collector. My grandparents were collectors, and my parents, both teachers, also were collectors.”

Assisting Kathryn is Gemstone, a rescue dog who is the store’s mascot. Kathryn said Gemstone is the one gem not for sale.

With a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and advertising from Michigan State University, Katherine has worked in advertising in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. However, she didn’t know anything existed beyond Duluth until a longtime friend took her to Cook County. Once she came, she fell in love with Lake Superior and the people and she made it her mission to find a way to move her.

Seven display cases are filled with various types of jewelry. One case has Rhinestone pieces. “We ladies like to call it flash. But each to their own because jewelry is so personal,” she said.

There is a lot of exquisite native art, basketry, jewelry, and pottery. “I love and admire their work and culture,” she added.

One table is filled with handmade pieces, “Tramp Art,” she called it. “People with no money would make and trade their art for meals.”

One display features Danish/Scandinavian jewelry. Another case display jewelry made in Mexico. Still, another display case features Native American jewelry.

“I keep my prices low on the items I sell, jewelry, art, antiques, vintage items, and new products. Locals who shop here will get a ten percent discount,” Kathryn said.

Her hours are Thursdays through Mondays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
