Big ship passenger has ties to Grand Marais

One might say that Lilean (Garner) Sedlacek came home with a big splash on Monday, June 13, when she sailed in on the T/S State of Michigan.

Due to sailboats bobbing in the harbor, the ship had to anchor just outside of town near the break wall.

The boat’s teaching engineer, Steph Sedlacek, is Lilean’s husband. It was Steph’s birthday, so he was allowed to take his “first mate” Lilean with him on this trip.

Many of the 56 cadets got to make a trip into town on a rescue boat. The main stop for them was World’s Best Donuts, and Lilean purchased 30-35 pounds of fish and several pounds of wild rice she used to make a birthday meal.

While in town Lilean visited her two aunts Betty Larsen and Joyce Drouillard while being driven around by her friend Ada Hill.
