Big changes coming to Senior Center

It might be the middle of winter and a seemingly slow time in the Northland, but that hasn’t stopped the Center from staying busy with numerous activities including groups, meetings, trips, and parties along with the changes still taking place with the building itself!

Our floor project is finally in sight and will be in the works in about two weeks. We will be looking for volunteers to help move the furniture on two separate days. If you are able to help with this, please contact me at 218-387-2660.

Another big change is the name of the Senior Center. It has been our desire to make many changes as we reinvent what we are to the community along with what we need to be and want to be, which is a direct reflection on what the younger senior wants/needs and also the public in general. We are a meeting place, a resource place, a social place, and a service place…. the list goes on and on!

It is important that the community is aware that our services and our building are not just for seniors. So with that in mind we have decided to take the word Senior out of our name and transition to a name that better represents who we are. We are working with a local company on a new logo and as soon as that is completed, our new name will be made public. Thank you all for your continued support as we make these changes!

Now, about our activities…. In the month of February any day that you dine with us – your name is entered into a raffle for a chance to win a brand new amazing slow cooker. Our meals have really improved and I encourage everyone to come and check it outand No…you do not have to be a senior. Just call by 9:30 a.m. the day of to register.

If you’re feeling lucky, on Thursday, February 21 we will be going to Grand Portage for a day trip. The van leaves Grand Marais at 9:45 a.m., returning at about 3:30 p.m. The cost of transportation is free and lunch is at your own expense. Please call 387- 2660 to register.

On February 22 Marjorie and Steve will be here for a Medicare presentation from 10 a.m. to noon. They will also do Individual Counseling appointments from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m. This is a free service and can help you figure out what is new and what the changes are for Medicare in 2019. To make an appointment call the Senior Linkage Line at 1-800-333-2433 Ext 81008.

Lisa Bauer along with two ISD 166 students are here the second Wednesday of every month to provide tech support. This is a great resource for anyone that has any questions about computers, programs, social media, smartphones, etc. Lisa is also available to answer any questions about live stream TV and all the different (somewhat confusing) options.

If you like to meet new people, share good food and discuss the topics of life in a casual, friendly setting then consider joining the Healthy Living Group that meets every Monday (even on days we are closed) at 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. You can drop in any time and stay as long as you like. This is such a great group and they always fill our building with laughter and leave with lasting memories. Everybody is welcome and highly encouraged to stop in and see if it’s a fit for you.

Just as a reminder of some of the other services/ activities that we have here:

Bus to Duluth – Tuesdays 8 a.m. (1-800- 275-3512 option8)

Blood Pressure Checks – First Tuesday of every month 10:30 a.m.

Book Club – Second Thursday of every month

Foot Care – Third Tuesday of every month

Legal Aide – Third Tuesday of every month

Driver’s Test – Second and fourth Tuesdays of every month

If you would like more information on any of these or our many other services, please contact me at 387- 2660. Stay warm and full of joy!

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Cook County Senior Center, courtesy of Programs and Services Coordinator Jes Rodne.
