Deer season continues in the Northland with many freezers being stocked with venison and some nice bucks being registered at area licensing stations. Buck’s Big Buck Contest continues as well, with a new leader in the weight category this week.
At press time Jesse Whipkey, formerly of Grand Marais, now living in Oscoda, Michigan, had taken the lead in the largest dressed weight category. Whipkey’s buck weighed in at 233 pounds. If he keeps the lead, Whipkey will win a new hunting rifle.
Whipkey beat last week’s leader, Jeff Hughey of Twin Lake, Michigan.
In third place in the largest dressed weight category is Jed Smith of Grand Marais with a buck weighing in at 230 pounds.
In the largest antler spread category, Ian Johnson of Grand Marais remains in the lead at press time with buck with a an awesome antler spread of 25.75 inches. Johnson may win half of the prize money, raised through entries in the contest.
The other two entries in the largest antler division are Kim Linnell whose buck had an antler spread of 21.5 inches. And in third place is John Shaw of Waconia with a 21-inch antler spread.
All of the hunters who entered the Big Buck Contest are still in the running for the cash drawing. One lucky hunter will have his or her name drawn to win the other half of the cash.
The contest runs in our area, zone 100, until the end of deer rifle season on Sunday, November 18. Although the contest is over then, deer hunting continues with archery season still open until December 31. Muzzleloader season opens November 24 and runs until December 9.
Continued safe hunting everyone!
