Big Buck Contest underway

Deer season is well underway and with it, Buck’s Hardware Big Buck Contest. Hunters are competing for prizes for the largest dressed weight deer and the largest antler spread. The hunter with the largest dressed weight wins

new rifle. The money from the Big Buck Contest entry fees—$10 per hunter—goes into the pot for the prize for the largest antlers. The hunter with the widest antler spread gets half of the money. The other half goes to a hunter drawn from all the entries. Good luck, everyone!

At press time, Mark Morehouse of Cottage Grove, MN was in the lead in the largest dressed weight category with a buck weighing 242.2 pounds. Morehouse bumped Jake Shaffer of Elk River who brought in a 10-point buck field dressed at 239 pounds. Also in the running for a while was local hunter Jerry Waha of Grand Portage with a 237- pound buck.

Winning in the largest antler category is CoLee Johnson of Hovland with a deer with a 25-inch antler spread.

Breyer McQuatters, 14, and Trace McQuatters, 12, of Grand Marais, had an awesome first day of deer firearm season. Breyer (right) got a five-point buck and Trace got a fourpointer, her first deer ever. They are the children of Clint and Sandi McQuatters of Grand Marais.

The contest began November 6 and runs until November 21.
