Big Buck Contest continues with Rabold in lead

Buck’s Big Buck Contest continues this week, with hunters jockeying for the prize with the biggest buck by weight or with the widest antler spread. There are dozens of photos of happy hunters with nice-looking bucks on the wall at Buck’s Hardware.

Prizes in the contest include a new rifle for the largest deer by dressed weight. Half of the prize money (from entry fees) goes to the largest antler spread and the other half of the prize money is given out in a drawing of all hunters entered.

At press time on Wednesday, November 16, Frankie Rabold of Grand Marais was still leading in the antler spread division with his nice-looking buck with a 23-inch antler spread.

Teri Smith of Grand Portage was in the lead last week in the largest dressed weight category with a 228-pound buck. However, she has been bumped from first place by Gary Schlienz of Grand Marais who bagged a huge 236-pound buck.

The contest started at the opening of rifle deer season and runs until the end of the season, Sunday, November 20.

Archery deer season is also open now and it continues until December 31.
