Superior North Outdoor Center and Grand Marais Music Collaborative team up to present musician Ben Weaver performing live at Harbor Park in downtown Grand Marais at 7 p.m. July 24.

“Surrounding Water” is a threeweek circumnavigation of Lake Superior by Ben Weaver by bicycle, with a vision to unify communities through song, poetry, discussion, and storytelling.

Weaver will act as a charter bearer to the Great Lakes Commons, using their visionary Commons Charter in his performances as an invitation to engage communities along the route in broad and inclusive conversations about the state of our fresh water.

Born in Eugene, Oregon, Weaver now lives in St. Paul with his three kids. He’s been compared to songwriters and vocalists like Greg Brown, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen. Despite similarities in vocal style and a catalog of finely-crafted songs, Weaver’s work stands on its own.

Weaver is a songwriter, poet, father, letterpress printer and adventure advocate. He has released eight studio albums of original music and four books of poetry. The bicycle is his chosen mode of transport for all activities, in all types of weather. Given his choice he will side with the animals, mountains, trees, lakes and rivers.

Great Lakes Commons (GLC) is a growing and open network of people, organizations and institutions from the Great Lakes bioregion who care passionately about these remarkable bodies of water. GLC members are united in a desire to insure that they have a vibrant future and share a commitment to the long term transformation of the care and governance of the Great Lakes.
