Bicycle safety class offered Sept. 13-14

An instructor from the League of American Bicyclists will be in Grand Marais September 14 – 15 to offer Traffic Skills 101. Although this bicycle safety class is for adults and children above age 14, there is a possibility that someone taking the course could become an instructor themselves—or at least a helper like Rory Smith at the May 2012 Cook County Bike Rodeo.

An opportunity for a life skills class on bicycle safety education has become available for interested parties in Cook County.

The MN Department of Transportation has offered to send instructors to Grand Marais September 13 and 14 for training individuals in the League of American Bicyclists education program called Traffic Skills 101.

Traffic Skills 101 (TS101) gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail.

Through TS101, students learn how to conduct bicycle safety checks, how to fix a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques.

This class is recommended for adults and children above age 14. The curriculum is fast-paced, nine hours, and prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling.

A certificate of completion is presented at the end of the course and qualifies one to conduct bicycle safety classes for other groups and individuals. Currently only one instructor is available locally.

Beyond the outreach of such class offerings the course is also useful for those receiving the instruction, helping them with a better understanding of bicycles and how they may plan for better accommodation of bicycling in the planning and development of their facilities and programs; it adds a perspective often missing from such activities.
