In response to Geri Jensen’s skepticism in her letter to the
editor:
By identifying yourself a skeptic, I take this to mean you are open-minded and willing to seek the truth. I’d like to challenge you to investigate what the Bible really has to say about “God-oriented slavery, submission of women, abuse of children, and genocide.”
By investigate, I mean personally search the Bible for specific examples, and if encountered, thoughtfully consider the context in which the examples are made.
The Bible is frequently criticized for what it “says” or “represents.” However, accusations are most often made on information not personally researched and investigated first-hand. Anyone who has ever played “telephone” can see the danger in second-hand information; it is akin to gossip.
In genuinely seeking an understanding of the Bible, skeptics may be surprised to find that is not an edict with which to shame you; rather, it is the greatest love story of all time.
It is the story of God’s infinite love for His creation, how His creation (“humanity”) rejected Him, what happened to humanity when they chose to live their own way to the exclusion of God, and just how far God went in the person of Jesus Christ (literally to hell and back) to reconcile us to Him. None of us will be able to look at God in eternity and say, “I had no way to know how much you loved me.”
