Bernice Seglem, 98, of Grand Marais passed away on Jan. 4, 2018 at the Cris Jensen nursing facility in Duluth.
Bernice was born Nov. 12, 1918, the daughter of Nels and Elizabeth Tofte, in Tofte, Minn. In her early years she attended school in Tofte, and then in Grand Marais. Bernice met, then married Carl Seglem on Feb. 14, 1942. Shortly after they moved to Texas where Carl served in the Air Force. They then moved back to Minnesota and lived in Lutsen.
Shortly after moving to Grand Marais Bernice worked at Humphrey’s store, Joynes Department Store and the Cook County Hospital and Nursing Home.
Bernice had many interests, both inside and outside the home. She was an exceptional cook and baker, and presented many of her greatest meals with her close friends from Tofte and Grand Marais.
Carl and Bernice shared their cabin on Saganaga Lake on Scandia Bay with family and friends. Many fishing and snowmobiling adventures were enjoyed, followed by her tremendous cooking and maybe a spirit or two.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Carl; four brothers, Albert, Leslie, Edward and Chester; and one sister, Margaret.
Bernice is survived by her children Janice (Larry) Smith of Duluth, David (Carolyn) Seglem of Grand Marais, and Jody (Gary) Lebovsky of Delano; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Cris Jensen nursing facility, staff and many friends left behind. A special thank you to Marge, Bernie’s favorite caregiver – her love and attentiveness was truly appreciated.
There will be a memorial service at the Congregational Church in Grand Marais on April 28, 2018 at 11:30 a.m.
