Cook County High School senior David Bergstrom competed at the Minnesota Class A Individual State Tennis Tournament on June 7 and 8. This was the second straight year David has competed in the state tournament. The Class A matches were played indoors at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

For the second year in a row, David had to play a defending state champion. David had a good attitude going into the match, knowing he would have to play Myles Tang (Breck School) sooner or later, so he might as well play him first. David gave it his best effort and played as well as he could against the eventual two-time state champion and ended up losing, 6-1, 6-2. David actually won more games off of Tang than the next two players combined.

David then went into the consolation bracket and defeated his next opponent, Jake Anderson (Fergus Falls H.S.), 6-7 (6), 6-2, (10-3) TB.

In the consolation semifinals, David competed against Ty Misialek (East Grand Forks H.S.). David got off to a good start, winning the first set 6-3, but had a tougher time in the second set. In the second set, the games went back and forth, both players fighting for each point, trying to take control of the set. David seemed to be in a good position when he took a 4-3 lead and was serving for the next game. At that point he may have tried rushing things too much and started making a number of unforced errors. His opponent did what he needed to do to win the next three games and he won the second set.

The players in the consolation rounds had to play a 10-point match tiebreaker in place of a third set. Ty Misialek got off to a good start and ended up winning the match tiebreaker, 10-6. It was a tough loss for David because it was a match that he, and most of us who watched, felt he should have won. His opponent deserves credit for hanging in there and doing what he needed to do to win.

David will continue to play in some tennis tournaments this summer, along with some other Cook County varsity players, before he starts playing Division 1 tennis for the University of North Dakota. Congratulations to David and the rest of the Cook County varsity tennis team on a fine season, and we wish David the best at UND!
