The Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team hosted Eveleth-Gilbert on Tuesday, May 10, for a tennis match at the Cook County public tennis courts. It was a windy day but both teams were thankful that the weather was nice enough to get the match in. Eveleth-Gilbert came away with a 5-2 win over the Vikings.
At No. 1 singles, junior captain David Bergstrom (CC) remained undefeated by cruising through his match and beating Steve Aro (E-G), 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, eighthgrader Lars Scannell (CC) continued his strong play, defeating Matt Scubic (E-G) in a match tiebreaker, 3-6,6-3, 10-7 (tiebreaker). Lars (4-1) only has one loss this season.
At No. 3 singles, seventhgrader Pete Summers (CC) lost to sophomore Colten Hennis (E-G), 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Mark Florey (E-G) and junior Travis Kedrowski (E-G) defeated sophomores Justin Goldstein (CC) and Collin Berglund (CC), 6-4, 6-0.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Miles Everson (E-G) and junior Nick Robillard (E-G) defeated eighth graders Daniel Ahrendt (CC) and Jamie Wick (CC), 6-3, 6-4.
The Vikings had to forfeit their No. 4 singles match and No. 3 doubles match, again, for lack of players.
Close match at Cloquet
Varsity tennis team traveled to Cloquet on Tuesday, May 17, to take on Cloquet-Esko- Carlton. The Vikings fought hard but ended up losing a close match to the Lumberjacks, 4-3.
At No.1 singles, junior captain David Bergstrom (CC) remained undefeated by breezing through sophomore lefty Sean Kedrowski (C-E-C), 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, eighthgrader Lars Scannell (CC) continued his strong play by defeating junior John Scheuer (C-E-C), 7-5, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore Justin Goldstein (CC) played singles for the first time this season and lost a close match to ninth grader Ryan Lind (C-EC), 0-6, 6-4, 10-2 (tiebreaker).
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Collin Berglund (CC) and eighth-grader Jamie Wick (CC) lost to senior Ryan Kedrowski (C-E-C) and junior Tanner Webster (C-E-C), 6-1, 7-5.
At No. 2 doubles, eighthgrader Daniel Ahrendt (CC) and seventh-grader Pete Summers (CC) played a strong match defeating juniors Josiah Sickler (C-E-C) and Camron Hallfrisch (C-E-C), 7-5, 6-2.
The Vikings had to forfeit their No. 4 singles match and No. 3 doubles match, again, for lack of players.
Despite losing 4-3 in the team score, the Vikings did win 3 of the 5 matches they played, and came close in the other two.
The boys’ varsity tennis team’s next match will be on Thursday, May 19, when they will play their first round match for the section tournament team competition. At press time, the team was waiting to learn who they will play.
