Who says good guys don’t finish first?

David Bergstrom has been named co-captain (with his college roommate Connor Oberle) of the University of North Dakota’s (UND) 2014-2015 men’s tennis team. A junior at UND, David is majoring in kinesiology.

A 2012 graduate of Cook County High School (CCHS), David first qualified for the Minnesota State tennis tournament as a junior in high school. He also earned all-conference honors in cross country running and basketball in high school while holding an A average.

In his first year at UND, a Division 1 program, David played mostly doubles, earning a varsity letter. Last year he moved to singles and posted a 3-11 record and was also 4-12 in doubles. This season Bergstrom moves to a top three spot at singles.

“I will play somewhere in the top 3 in singles matches this year. It changes throughout the year, so I will play No. 1, No. 2, or No.3 depending upon the matches. I will also play doubles with Connor again,” said Bergstrom.

When asked what the difference was between high school and college David was quick to respond, “Most of the people I play against I have never seen before. They come, sometimes from other countries. We play against a lot of colleges from out west. Almost no one I play against is from Minnesota, so I didn’t see them in tournaments or high school matches. The level of competition is very high, but it’s a lot of fun.”

The team participates in a short fall season and begins its regular season in January, finishing in April after having played 20 matches. David plans to finish his undergraduate degree next year and then will head to graduate school to get a doctorate in physical therapy.

“I talk to my mom now about her work and finally understand what she is talking about,” said Bergstrom. His mother, Lee, is a physical therapist and his father Scott operates the family business, the Thomsonite Beach Inn & Suites. Both Scott and Lee are avid tennis players and help out with the Cook County Tennis Association.
