Bee sting reaction triggers emergency response

A call to Cook County Law Enforcement reporting a woman experiencing an allergic reaction after being stung by bees sent emergency medical responders from Hovland and Colvill into action. Bonnie Weber, of Hugo, MN, was visiting relatives on Camp 20 Road in Hovland when she was apparently stung and began having difficulty breathing.

A family member went to nearby neighbor Darnell LaBoda to make the 911 call at 11:42 a.m. on Monday, August 13. Hovland First Responder Jon Sage said the department heard “breathing problem” and got its medical rescue vehicle rolling. Paul McFarlane from the Colvill Fire Department also responded to the emergency call.

First Responders from Hovland were on-scene by 11:55 a.m. to find the woman in severe anaphylactic shock. Family members had administered medication from emergency EPI pens, with no improvement. A third EPI pen was administered and the patient was started on oxygen.

Cook County Ambulance arrived at 12:08 p.m. and the woman was transported to North Shore Hospital, where she was treated and released.
