Thecommunity of Beaver Bay is hosting its seventh annual Colonial Sugar On Snow event on Friday and Saturday, February 26–27. The public is invited to meet at the Beaver Bay Community Center to participate in Colonial trades, games and activities.
Join tradesmen and women at work at blacksmithing, soap making, broom making, spinning, weaving, spoon carving, and more. Mix a medicinal powder or comfit with the apothecary, grind grain in the gristmill, or stir up a Colonial pudding with Goodwife Laura. Play the games children of the 1700s played. Thenjoin an old-fashioned corn husking bee and see who can husk their pile of corn first!
There will also be a two-man saw contest, a wood splitting contest and a family tug of war. Enjoy fresh-baked pie as your prize!
There will be a luncheon of hot soup served with fresh thick-cut bread and the treat of the day will be “sugar on snow.” Everyone is invited to share this sweet ending of the hard work and long hours of harvesting maple sap and turning it into a year’s supple of syrup and sugar. Enjoy pure maple syrup, warmed to the candy state and turned to taffy as it is ladled over a mound of “snow.”
Events will be held on Friday from noon until 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
