Beating cabin fever at the Care Center

The residents at North Shore Health Care Center know how to beat “cabin fever” with a full calendar of activities scheduled for February. This month has plenty to celebrate from the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and Presidents Day.

Winter is always a good time to bring out the craft projects, and we plan to do a lot of that this month. Our “Babes N’ Bonnets” group will meet on Saturday, February 3 at 2 p.m. This group is working 1:1 with volunteers from the community to create baby hats to be given to local babies at a later date. We will also be doing some fun Valentine crafts for Valentine’s Day, and maybe some flower crafts to brighten our spirits.

We have a lot of games scheduled for February too! The residents love to participate in a board or card game on a cold winter afternoon. On February 8 at 2:30, we will be having a group of children joining us for “Valentine Bingo.” It’s always a joy to have the little ones join in the fun.

Our rehabilitation (rehab) room is always busy – especially during the winter months. Michelle Lehto, rehab aide, assists Mary Liebsch as she gets a good workout.

The festivities will continue on February 13 when we celebrate the beginning of Mardi Gras with “Happy Hour with Hilja.”

The monthly birthday party will be held on Wednesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day, at 3 p.m. This month we will honor Bonnie Johnson and Rolf Skrien. There will be cake and ice cream, along with Doug Sanders playing our favorite love songs on the piano. Friends and relatives are always welcome to join us for the party.

We’re hoping for nice weather on February 15 when we will go on an outing to the Senior Center for lunch, and visiting with our friends there.

The residents are looking forward to the Lioness Social to be held on Saturday, February 17 at 3 p.m. Along with the wonderful desserts and music they bring, it is always a pleasure to visit with the ladies too.

There is nothing like music to help us get through the winter months, and we have a full venue during February. Myron Bursheim plays most Sunday afternoons, and Susan Scherer is here on Wednesdays. This month Marco Good will be joining us on February 11 at 2:30 p.m., Pastor Daren Blanck on February 12 at 2 p.m., Portage Band on February 24 at 6:30 p.m., and Amy Schmidt and Friends on February 27 at 2 p.m. Family and friends are always welcome to join us at any of these music events.

The residents were delighted to have Portage Band back after the holidays. Pictured here are Skip Rouser and Ken Netland on the dance floor.

We love our music to help beat the winter blues. Myron Bursheim brings his musical talent to the Care Center most Sunday afternoons.
