In the early 1980s, I didn’t have a working camera. Howard Sivertson let me borrow his Hasselblad to use for the newspaper for a series of several months. I have never taken pictures with a better camera. Howard laughed when I asked to buy it; I hope one of his family members still has it.
That act of kindness, though, went deeper. Howard created the bears for the Cook County News-Herald. He was paid, but not a lot, and his contribution has lasted many generations and will hopefully last well into the future.
Howard’s bears are remarkable. They fish, curl, play baseball, football, graduate from high school, take in Christmas and Easter, and of course, the teary-eyed Thanksgiving bear getting a hug from a turkey—with his ax next to him on the ground— has always drawn sweet comments from our readers. Here are some of the many bears Howard created for you, the reader. Rest in peace, Howard.
