Bear hunter injured in hunting accident





A Wisconsin bear hunter was life-flighted to Duluth for emergency treatment at 11:00 a.m. on September 2 after accidentally shooting himself while bear hunting.

Elmer M. Youngs, 65, of Warrens, Wisconsin was climbing into his hunting stand located off the Old Dump Road in Grand Marais when his handgun, a 44 magnum with hollow point shells, fell out of his holster and discharged. He suffered a gunshot wound to his elbow.

Youngs was hunting with family members who brought him to Cook County North Shore Hospital. He was transported by helicopter to Duluth. Cook County Law Enforcement reported that the injury was not life-threatening but that immediate surgery was needed, with additional surgeries to follow to save the man’s arm.

No charges are pending.
