One day, back in the early 1950s, on the way home from church, a voice on the radio said, “Hello, Wisconsin,” and Senator Joe McCarthy started to speak. My dad, who was a staunch Republican, said McCarthy was the most dangerous man in the Republican party and the state of Wisconsin.
I asked him what he meant and Dad told me, “He is rude and he uses his office for his own gain. He doesn’t care about others.”
When I asked how, Dad said that McCarthy would accuse others of being communists, whether or not it was supported by facts. He lied about people which was a danger to his office.
Dad turned off the radio and told me to be true and faithful to others, and I never forgot his words. I was about 12 years old.
