“Honor the Past, Enrich the Future”— our motto
There will be a meet and greet open house for volunteers (and for those who want to learn more about volunteering) on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery.
Free refreshments will be served. Drop in, sign up and learn more!
Here’s a chance to learn more about the many volunteer opportunities at the Cook County Historical Society’s five sites: Cook County History Museum, Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, Chippewa City Church, Bally Blacksmith Shop, and Fish House replica with tug the Neegee.
We have two different sites that are always in need of volunteers to welcome visitors. The Cook County History Museum offers a great opportunity to learn more about the county’s history in this 1896 Victorian home (formerly the lightkeeper’s residence) which features exhibits and archives.
The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery has new art exhibits opening monthly as well as the historic Anna C. Johnson Wing with her artworks from the early 1900s on permanent display. The JHP Art Gallery is especially seeking weekend volunteers. The volunteer shifts are three hours long and volunteers are welcome to bring a book, tablet or craft project to work on while at the front desk.
If you like to get outside, consider becoming a harbor tour guide on summer Saturday afternoons. We can always use tour guides for our harbor history walking tour (weather permitting). The tours meet at 1 p.m. in front of the museum and generally last one hour. We already have a printed guide for you to follow so after a rehearsal or two you will be good to go!
These are just a few examples of what is available for volunteers. We have many other opportunities from writing articles, to landscaping, to computer projects.
