Bats are hot for young ballplayers

Cook County youth baseball started on Sunday, June 5 with two Little League games. In the first game of the season the Twins took on the Dodgers. The Twins’ bats started out hot as they began scoring runs in the first inning. The Dodgers battled back into the game with some runs of their own. In the end the Twins’ bats were too much for the Dodgers on this day. The Twins won the game 14 – 7.

Our next game featured the Dodgers versus the Cubs. It was a well-matched game from the first pitch. Both teams played well as they battled back and forth. In the end the Cubs came up a little short losing to the Dodgers 8 – 6.

On Monday, June 6 our little T-ballers took the field. We had a great turnout with enough kids to have three teams: the Turtles, Blue Jays, and Moose. I think all had fun as they took their first steps toward the hall of fame. Okay, they learned a few baseball skills and played in the dirt.

I saw lots of smiles and you can look for more as they start their season Monday, June 13 at 4:30 p.m. The Turtles will battle the Blue Jays. Then the Blue Jays will take on the Moose at 5:15 p.m.

Tuesday’s games began with parent pitch matches. The Yankees traveled to Grand Portage to take on the Thunder. I don’t have the final score, but I heard the Yankees squeaked out a victory for their first win of the season. In the other game the Lumberjacks fought it out with the Lions. The bats of both teams came alive from the beginning and didn’t let up. The Lumberjacks eked out the Lions 24 – 22 in an epic battle of two slugging teams.

Right after the parent pitch game, the Twins and Cubs met for the first time on the field of battle. The Twins have a number of sluggers on their team, so this game looked to be a high scoring affair. Not the case at all as we quickly settled into a pitcher’s duel.

Bradley Wilson of the Twins pitched a scoreless 5 innings and seemed to be in control of the Cubs’ bats. You couldn’t have expected more from young Bradley as he pitched a wonderful game. The managers were forced to take him out after 5 innings as he had reached his innings pitched for the week.

On the mound for the Cubs was Brent Sorensen. He pitched an equally impressive game in his first outing of the season. He held the powerful Twins to only two runs in a competitive game performance. It was a great game for spectators as the Cubs pulled out a victory over the Twins 6 – 2. That leaves our Little League teams with the same 1 – 1 record after our first week of games.

Next week we have games on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Thursday’s game will be an away game, as the Cubs will travel to Silver Bay for a double header.
