The sounds of whistles, balls bouncing, and players voices came from the Pam Taylor gymnasium last Tuesday. They were happy sounds.

Opening the door to the gym one’s eyes were turned to the Viking girls’ basketball players who were at the far end of the gym working out under the tutelage of head coach Kelly Hawsen and her capable assistants, her husband Kyler and Rachel Seim.

Hawsen welcomed 15 girls to practice this past week. Well, she said, there are 15 girls who will be playing this year but a couple who can’t practice yet because being of health reason.

There are two returning starters from last years’ team, and three seniors Rhonnie Poyirier, Anna Hay, and Solay Muhr. Rhonnie, a forward, was key starter last year and Anna, a guard, played a lot of minutes last year. Solay is new to the team.

“We are excited to be playing this season,” said Hawsen. Last year basketball started in January and there was no state play-off for the abbreviated season.

Defense will be a mix of man and zone, and the offense will be a mix as well, coach said.

“We will be focusing on the fundamentals to build on throughout the year,” said Hawsen.

The first home game will be Friday, December 3. The following day the team will head to Silver Bay to play against several teams in a series of scrimmages.
