Baseball team wins, loses

When the weather allowed, the baseball team took to the field and played several games in two weeks.

The Vikings got in a road game against Barnum on Wednesday, May 2. “We prevailed 12-3,” said head coach Arleigh Jorgenson. “Andrew Miller pitched four innings striking out 8, walking 1 and giving up 3 hits. He gave up one run, with another being unearned.”

Adam Dorr finished the last three innings, with three strikeouts, one walk, and gave up two hits, one of which was a home run.

The home run came against the first batter Adam faced.

“He was ahead in the count and he made too good of a pitch,” coach Jorgenson said. “After that, he settled in and threw better and better as he went.”

Big hits came off the bats of Tristen Bockovich, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Josh Prom was 2 for 3, the first of which was a triple. Prom finished with two RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Andrew Miller was one for one with two walks and a sacrifice fly. He scored twice, drove in two, and stole three bases.

All of the Vikings got on a base at one time or another. “There was some sputtering in our offense early, but there are some signs that some guys are beginning to get going,” the coach said.

Vikings versus South Ridge May 3 at home

Holding a lead of 5-3 going into the seventh, “We let it slip away 6-5,” said head coach Jorgenson.

“Tristen Bockovich threw the first three innings. Opening the second inning, an error led to their first of two runs. Dillon Sjogren took them down one-two-three in the fourth, but loaded the bases with walks in the fifth. Joe Deschampe came in and put out the fire, although a run did score on a fielder’s choice. In the seventh, Joe developed a sore arm after walking the first hitter. Josh Prom came in and an error, a balk and another walk yielded three runs for South Ridge. The Vikings collected 7 hits. Cameron Roy was 2 for 3, and Joe Deschampe drove in three runs. Josh Prom scored twice.”

Timberwolves top Vikings; Wrens also prevail

A trip to Ely on Saturday, May 5 ended in a 10-1 loss for the Vikings. Ely pitcher Trevor Mattson recorded 7 strikeouts and only allowed four hits. Andrew Miller went 2-3 at the plate with a double.

On Tuesday, May 8, the Vikings played the Wrenshall Wrens at home in the rain and fell 2-1. Tristen Bockovich threw a complete game and gave up no earned runs. Wrenshall scored twice in the first inning with the help of two errors at third base, a walk, and one hit. That was it, though, as Tristen went on to strike out 8, walked 2, and gave up just three hits. The Vikings did reach third base four times but could score only once via a bases loaded walk.
