Baseball team sweeps Silver Bay in a double header

Playing an opponent they know all too well— many of the kids play together on a summer team—the Cook County Boys’ baseball squad ended their regular season with two wins over the Mariners on Friday, May 27, in Grand Marais.

The Vikings took a 2-1 lead after one inning of play in the first game. Hunter Gomez and Jacob Dorr hit doubles in the first to drive in the two runs.

Junior pitcher Paul Dorr had a great game on the mound. The junior right-hander gave up three hits and one run in six and one-third innings. Kole Anderson came to relieve Paul and finished the last two-thirds of an inning. Kole recorded the save for the Vikings.

Silver Bay’s Braylan Hoff took the loss. Hoff pitched three and two-thirds innings. He allowed six hits and six runs while striking out six.

The Vikings finished with eight hits. Jaco Dorr, Hunter Gomez, and Paul Dorr each had two hits. Amos Falter and Kole Anderson each had one hit in the game.

Vikings win in extra innings

The Vikings took a nice 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game of the double header against the Silver Bay Mariners.

Paul Dorr got things started with a walk. Paul moved to third on a wild pitch to Hunter Gomez. Gomez hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher, who held Paul at third before throwing Gomez out at first.

Jacob Dorr was up next, and he singled, driving in his brother Paul.

Kole Anderson was up next, and he smacked a home run on a fly ball to left field, driving in Jacob Dorr and giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Silver Bay finally got on the board with one run in the fourth. Stadler doubled and then took second when T Cook hit a long fly to center field, which was caught for the out. Mannor Ollman’s single scored Stadler, and the Mariners were finally on the scoreboard.

The Mariners tied the game in the next inning with two runs. Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh innings, which took the game to an extra inning.

The Mariners made a pitching change in the eighth, bringing in Stadler for Jacob Carpenter. Jacob Dorr singled, and Kole Anderson walked. Both Dorr and Anderson advanced bases on a wild pitch thrown to Cade Smith. Smith walked to load the bases.

Isaac Sandstrom brought in Jacob Dorr for an RBI on a hard hit groundball to the shortstop. Isaac was safe at first on an error, and the Vikings were up 4-3.

Cy Oberholzer took his turn at bat and singled, driving in Anderson and Smith to make it 6-3.

The Mariner’s last at bats ended with a pop-up off the bat of Jacob Carpenter caught by Hunter Rex. Kole Anderson, who was in to relieve Dorr, struck out the next two batters, and the Vikings won 6-3.

Jacob Dorr led the Vikings with three hits and one RBI in four plate appearances.

Kole Anderson was two for three with a walk and two RBIs. Cy Oberholzer and Paul Dorr were the only other Vikings to get a hit in a game well pitched by Silver Bay’s ninth-grade pitcher Jacob Carpenter.

Jacob Dorr took the win for the Vikings on the mound. Jacob threw 7.1 innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six and walking three.

Jacob Carpenter pitched 7.2 innings. He allowed five hits and three runs, striking out seven and walking two.

Jake Stadler pitched one-third of an inning, and he took the loss. Jake gave up two hits and three runs, striking out one and walking two.

With the two victories, the Vikings’ record is 5-11.
