We knew the talent was there, but could the kids get outside, out of the gym, and actually practice baseball on a real field before the playoffs started?
Turns out they could, and as the weather warmed and snow dissipated, the kids have gotten better and better.
McGregor, the win streak begins
Last Thursday the Vikings traveled to McGregor and won 7-4. Josh Prom started and pitched four innings. Adam Dorr finished the game.
“We got behind early on through an error, a hit batsman and a double, but two runs was all they would get until they scored two in the seventh on a base hit, a walk and two hits,” said head coach Arleigh Jorgenson.
“Josh struck out two and walked two. Adam gave up just one walk. Josh scattered five hits and Adam three,” noted the coach.
On offense Andrew Miller had a single and a double, scoring twice. Joe Deschampe had a double and a single and drove in three.
Tristen Bockovich had two hits and an RBI. Cameron Roy drove in the other one.
Vikings beat the Agates
On Friday, coach Jorgenson took his team to Two Harbors, and the Vikings won 7-1.
Andrew Miller had a stellar game on the mound, throwing a complete game and striking out 10 hitters.
“Their one run came on a passed ball on a strike out and a base hit. It was the only hit they got all game,” Jorgenson said, adding, “Andrew hit one batter, walked one. That was it for Two Harbors.”
The Vikings scored runs in a variety of ways. Colton Furlong walked twice and scored both times. “A string of hits, walks, and a fielder’s choice allowed us to score four times in the sixth. Lots of our scoring came with two outs, and we played solid defense; both good signs,” Jorgenson said.
Vikings tame Bulldogs
On Monday, May 14 Carlton came to town and the Vikings won 8-2.
Josh Prom once again took the hill and held the Bulldogs to no runs until they scored two in the fifth.
Adam Dorr took over and held them scoreless for the final two. Josh struck out two, walked three, and hit one batter. He gave up two hits. Adam struck out one, walked none, and gave up two hits.
“We committed two errors in the game,” coach Jorgenson said.
“Colton Furlong, leading off, again walked twice, got one hit, and scored twice. Tristen Bockovich had two singles and a double. He scored three times. Cameron Roy reached base three times and scored twice. Josh Prom reached base four times and Garrett Curran reached three times. Again, a well-played ball game,” noted the coach.
Vikings polish off Agates
The next day Two Harbors came to Grand Marais, and the Vikings took the contest 6-1.
Tristen Bockovich pitched the whole game, said Jorgenson. “He got into trouble in the second inning loading the bases by giving up two hits, and walked two. He pitched his way out of it by giving up just one run. He cruised the rest of the way. He struck out four and walked just two. He gave up six hits.”
On offense the Vikings’ speedy leadoff hitter Colton Furlong had two singles and scored twice. Andrew Miller once again had a big night, going four for four with two singles, a double, and a triple. Bockovich was two for three.
Cameron Roy and Dillon Sjogren each reached base twice and Dillon scored twice.
No rest
With no rest for the weary, the Vikings traveled to Floodwood on Thursday, May 17 and then the next day Moose Lake was scheduled to come to Grand Marais to play.
The following day, Saturday, Jorgenson said, “We go to Ely for tournament play against Mesabi East and Mounds Park Academy out of St. Paul. And then, next Friday, Northeast Range comes to town to conclude our regular season.”
Playoffs begin on May 29. “We are on a winning streak which we hope we can continue into the playoffs, but in any case, the boys are playing well and having fun through this condensed season,” coach Jorgenson said.
