Playing a schedule that would make a professional baseball player weary, maybe even weep, the CCHS Vikings continued to win against all comers as they put four more wins in the win column, going 9-0 over the last two weeks.

On Friday, May 10 the host Vikings pounded Floodwood 12-3.

The Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Polar Bears scored one in the second and two in the third to knot the score. Neither team could buy a run in the fourth, but the Vikings erupted for four runs in the sixth and tacked on five more in the seventh to win going away.

Josh Prom got the win on the mound. Josh pitched one and one-third innings, striking out four while not allowing a hit or a run. He was relieved by Adam Dorr with Jacob Dorr coming in to get the last five outs and get the save.

Ethan Dehn went four and a third innings, giving up seven runs and seven hits to take the loss for the Polar Bears.

Joe Deschampe, Andrew Miller and Josh Prom each had two hits for the Vikings, who recorded a dozen hits in the game. Conner Somnis stole base three times, and five other Vikings recorded two steals. Prom and Levi Sheils each had three RBIs, and Somnis had two RBIs.

Vikings play a doubleheader

The next day the Vikings woke up early and traveled to Silver Bay to first play the Mariners before taking on the South Ridge Panthers at noon.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Vikings rallied to score two runs in the second on an RBI single by Aram Falter.

With hard-throwing Tristen Bockovich on the mound and in good command of his pitches, the one-run lead was all they would need to win. However, the Vikings added a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take a 7-1 win over the Mariners.

Bockovich pitched six innings, striking out eight while allowing one run on three hits.

Big RBI hits in the sixth inning came by Levi Sheils, Tristen Bockovich, and Dillon Sjogren.

All told, the Vikings finished with nine hits. Andrew Miller and Tristen Bockovich each had two hits. Bockovich led the team in steals with four as the Vikings tore up the base paths with 10 steals.

The Vikings finished the game without committing an error.

Riley Tiboni led the Mariners in hitting by going 2-3 at the plate. Ero Wallin was credited with the loss. Ero gave up seven runs on nine hits over six innings.

Vikings duel with South Ridge

Andrew Miller took the mound in the second game, and the Viking fielders were once again left with little to do but pick daisies—if any daisies could possibly grow in this cold weather– while Andrew mowed down the South Ridge Panther line-up.

Miller walked four, gave up one hit and recorded 15 strikeouts in six innings.

Over the last three games he has pitched, Miller has been virtually unhittable. He has struck out 44 batters in 19 innings of shutout baseball.

Meanwhile, the Panthers’ Ben Woods only gave up two hits in the game. But both singles, one by Joe Deschampe and one by Levi Sheils, came with men on who had walked and each hitter recorded an RBI.

Panthers’ pitcher Ben Woods threw 5 2/3 innings, recording eight strikeouts, two hits and giving up six walks.

Vikings beat McGregor Mercuries

Playing in the rain at home on Tuesday, May 14, the Vikings defeated the McGregor Mercuries 18-8, with Josh Prom getting the win.

Prom gave up two runs on five hits, striking out seven over four innings. Young relievers Jacob Dorr and Tate Crawford came in and closed out the game to preserve the win.

Andrew Miller led the team with four hits, one triple and three singles.

McGregor led 2-0 after one, but the Vikings rallied for eight runs in the second. Cameron Roy hit for a fielder’s choice, bringing in the first run. An error allowed the second run to score, Josh Prom walked with the bases loaded to score another run, and an error allowed two more Vikings to cross home plate in the big second inning.

The Vikings ended with 10 hits, Conner Somnis had two hits and walked once in three plate appearances. Dillon Sjogren finished with a single and three stolen bases. All told the Vikings stole 12 bases.

Picking up RBIs were Cameron Roy (2), Miller (3), Tate Crawford (1), Prom (1), Somnis (2), Tristen Bockovich (1) and Devon Premo finished with one RBI. The Vikings scored seven unearned runs.
