On a cold snowy day the Cook County High School baseball team started its season with an 8-1 win over rival Silver Bay Mariners on the Mariners’ home field in a contest played Tuesday, April 10.
Head coach Arleigh Jorgenson had to be pleased with his pitchers.
Tristen Bockovich took the mound and pitched the first five innings, striking out 10 while giving up only four hits and four walks. Andrew Miller came on in relief and struck out four and didn’t allow a hit.
As good as the Vikings’ pitching was, the Viking batters were equally as good.
“With great at-bats, Colton Furlong reached base four out of five times,” said Jorgenson, noting that Furlong scored three times, “without a hit to account for it.”
Coach Jorgenson said Josh Prom put down two nice bunts, scored twice and drove in two runs. Andrew Miller hit into a bases-loaded double play in the fourth, but doubled in the first, drove in another in the third with a sacrifice fly, and drove in three in the sixth. Garrett Curran drove in one run in the third.
“Overall, we put the bat on the ball, drew some walks, and pitched very well,” noted coach Jorgenson.
The junior varsity also had a good outing, said the coach. “Jordan Porter took the mound, and Derek Smith went behind the plate without an ounce of experience on a full-sized field.
“Joe Deschampe threw an inning, to get his feet wet on the mound, as we expect some varsity innings from our first baseman. We were pleased with every player. It was cold, and snow flurries accented the JV game, but we played hard and with confidence. There are plenty of things to work out, but coming right out of the gym, we looked like a team on the rise.”
