The glorious sound of hearing an umpire say “Play ball” will have to wait for a while.
Cook County High School Athletic Director and Assistant Baseball Coach Andy Feddemma sent out an email on Monday, April 11th that surprised no Viking sports fan. Upcoming baseball and softball games were going to be rescheduled because of impending mid- April snow.
So, it seems, once again the start of high school baseball and softball in Cook County has been plagued by late winter weather. And in one case, a lack of umpires to ump a game.
The baseball game scheduled Tuesday April 12 against Moose Lake- Willow River was postponed until Friday, April 22. That was rescheduled because Moose Lake couldn’t find anyone to ump the game.
The girls’ softball game at Moose Lake-Willow River on the same day was a “weather permitting” decision.
Wednesday’s April 13 softball game against North Shore rival Silver Bay was rescheduled for Monday, May 2.
Thursday’s April 14 baseball and softball games at Esko were also a game decision, but with snow predicted for the 13th and 14th, those games will likely have to be played sometime in the future. A future without snow falling, hopefully. And the sounds of “Play ball” can be heard across the Northland.
