For the fourth year, Friends of Minnesota Barns (FoMB) is seeking local barn owners to enter their barn into FoMB’s 2011 Barn of the Year Award contest. The award program will recognize barn owners who have made efforts to preserve their barn and help to provide examples and ideas for other owners with problem barns. The entries will be divided into the following categories: . Most Dramatic Rescue: The winner of this category will have been determined by the judges to be the barn brought back the farthest from the dead. This category recognizes the dedication and hard work of those who in the process of actually saving a barn that may have gone beyond the boundaries of normal common sense and sanity . Oldest Barn: the winner of this category will have been determined by the judges to be the oldest barn that has been well restored and submitted for consideration in the 2011 Barn of the Year Contest. . Most Generational Barn: The winner or winners of this category will have been determined by the judges to be the barn that has remained in the same family for the most consecutive generations. . Best Agricultural Adaptive Re-Use: The winner in this category will have been determined by the judges to be the barn that is still being used for its original purpose, or has been adapted for re-use for purposes related to agriculture. . Best Non-Agricultural Adaptive Re-use: The winner in this category will have been determined by the judges to be the barn that has been adapted for a reuse not related to agriculture. . Most Traditional Restoration: The winner in this category will have been determined by the judges to be the barn that has been restored to the point that it looks like it did when originally constructed.
Barn owners can find contest entry forms on www.friendsofminnesotabarns.org. The completed entry nomination must be returned by Aug. 31. The winner of each category will receive a plaque, recognition in the newsletter and website as well as a one-year membership to Friends of Minnesota Barns.
