A recent attempt by citizens to convince Terry Backlund to throw his hat in the ring and run for mayor of Grand Marais as a write-in candidate has failed.
Mayors are elected to serve two-year terms in Grand Marais.
“I appreciate the thought, but I’m just too busy,” said Backlund.
A citizens’ group has taken out ads in the Cook County News-Herald asking for the public to write-in Terry Backlund’s name for the mayor’s job, but even if he gets enough votes to win, Backlund said on Wednesday, November 2, he would refuse the position.
“I’m flattered,” said Backlund. “But with my school bus driving job and real estate business, I wouldn’t have time to be mayor.”
Current Mayor Jay Arrowsmith-DeCoux announced some time ago his intention to run for a second term, but he failed to sign up on time, leaving the space on the ballot where mayoral candidates are listed blank.
Since then Arrowsmith-DeCoux said he is indeed a candidate and is asking for the public’s support for his write-in candidacy on November 8.
