The Hub, formerly referred to as the Cook County Senior Center, has organized a 2019 Back-To-School supply drive.
With the first day of school quickly approaching, “We want to help Cook County students start the year off on the right track,” said Chris Bautch.
“Having school supplies they need to achieve academic success helps these kids focus and learn at school,” noted Bautch. “Please consider helping ensure that all kids have what they need to learn and succeed this school year which will help them reach their full potential.”
The collection period began August 12 and extends through September 30, 2019.
What do the kids need?
Topping the list is backpacks, Crayola crayons (24 count), No. 2 pencils, pencil top erasers/erasers, spiral notebooks/wide, rulers, folders, pencil sharpeners, clear tape, highlighters/all colors.

Drop off the items at The Hub/ Senior Citizen Center, 10 North Broadway, Grand Marais.

What else is going on at the Hub?
Each third Tuesday of every month we offer Foot and Nail Care, which is also sponsored by Sawtooth Mountain Clinic. This is held from 9 to 11 a.m. No appointment is necessary, but please arrive by 10:30 a.m. Bring a towel and a basin to soak your feet in. Cost is $10.
Need to get your driver’s license? Provisional licenses, written exams, and behind the wheel tests are given in Grand Marais at the Senior Center on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. For more information to schedule a behind the wheel test, call 1-218-216-0835.
The first Tuesday of every month starting at 10:30 a.m. there will be nurses from the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic here to check blood pressure and blood sugar. There is a $3 charge for the blood sugar checkup, no charge for the blood pressure. No appointment is necessary.
Not all activities are scheduled. There is unstructured time at the center. Each day people gather to play board games or challenge each other in a game of cards. Computers are here for anyone to use—first come first served—and it’s a great place to come and read a newspaper or magazine and visit.
Lunch is served daily. Please remember to pre-register for lunch by 9:30 a.m. The cost to eat lunch for seniors over 60 is $4. Everyone else pays $7.50.
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is courtesy of The Hub Activity Director Chris Bautch.
