Axtell is coming to the North Shore. The name of the musical twosome may seem very familiar. Rightly so, as half of the duet is Katrina Axtell, a 2011 Cook County High School graduate. During college Katrina took some time to travel abroad and visited Argentina to learn some Spanish. One evening in Buenos Aires she was drawn to the music coming from an old house turned bar and there she met Julian Hernandez, a talented singer/songwriter.

Their meeting led to performing together, busking in the streets at first but as their repertoire grew, they moved to larger venues, playing together in clubs in cities in Argentina and Uruguay. They offer a unique neo-folk sound, ranging from entertaining covers such as their unique blend of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics and the Ray Charles classic Hit the Road, Jack to their own originals Dance Monkey Boy and Hollow.

At press time on June 23, Axtell was strumming and sharing harmonies at The Red Mug Coffeehouse in Superior, Wisconsin, with other gigs scheduled for Beaner’s and Tycoon’s Alehouse in Duluth. They will go on to play other concerts after the 4th of July in LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Winona, Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Boulder, Colorado and more.

But before that tour begins, Axtell will perform at a CD release show at the Hovland Town Hall at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30. The cost will be $8 for adults; kids are free. Their six-song EP No More Monkey Business will be available for the first time at that concert.
