On Tuesday, August 24, the Cook County Tennis Association celebrated its annual meeting at The Landing on Devil Track. It was also an opportunity for a social gathering off the courts.
CCTA members and spouses discussed the past year of operations of the CCTA which included supporting the high school boys and girls teams, maintenance of the courts, election of board officers, along with the successes and challenges that face the association in the future.
Rod Wannebo presented four certificates of appreciation to the following CCTA members: Mike Carlson was recognized for his position as board treasurer along with his willingness to assist with just about anything at any time.
David Smith who has been in charge of facilities operations will be taking a one-year leave of absence and plans to return. The board is happy that he will continue in this capacity once he returns.
Frankie Jarchow was presented the certificate of appreciation for her continuous support of CCTA programs and activities for 20 years. Frankie and her late husband, Gordon, were instrumental in the process of forming the CCTA and served on the very first CCTA board. Most recently she has worked to establish the social tennis activities on Fridays, which has gained popularity. She has also been successful gathering women tennis players together for some match play in the mornings.
The final certificate was presented to David Bergstrom for his outstanding contribution to the CCTA through his tennis playing success, his sportsmanship on the tennis court and his behavior on and off the tennis courts. David began playing tennis at the age of 5 and began participating in local and USTA tournaments at the age of 10. He was the male recipient of the USTA Jerry Noyce Junior Sportsmanship award in 2008. He participated in the State High School Tennis Tournament in 2011 and 2012. David was recruited to play Division One tennis at the University of North Dakota in the Big Sky Conference. He received a USTA Serves College Scholarship in the amount of $8,000 for his academic success, passion/support for tennis and his tennis accomplishments. His current educational plans include study in the health sciences with an emphasis in Sports Medicine. In his absence, David’s mom, Lee accepted the award on his behalf.
