Minneapolis author Peter Geye says November is the best month of the year for a trip to the North Shore. Wintering, which Knopf published in June, is situated in the fictional town of Gunflint, which bears some resemblance to the town and surrounding area of Grand Marais, Minn.

So it’s appropriate that Peter will be a featured speaker during Grand Marais’s annual Storm Fest Nov. 11-13. Peter will read a stormy section of his new novel at Voyageur Brewing Company in Grand Marais, Saturday, Nov.1 2 at 3 p.m. and conclude with a Q&A session. He is also signing his book at Lake Superior Trading Post from 1 – 2 p. m. that same Saturday.

Geyes said he chose the North Shore as the setting for all three of his books because he’s visited there often since he was a kid, logging 13 visits last year. He says the dreamy landscape, weather, seasons and memorable people offer a lot of inspiration to artistic people like him.

“I can’t not write about the North Shore,” he says with a tinge of regret. “I’ve started some books about different locales, but I haven’t been inspired to finish them.”
