The Cook County ATV Club is the latest in a string of individuals and community groups to contribute to the fund started in November 2007 to support county residents making trips to Duluth for cancer treatment. On July 27, the ATV Club added $500 to the North Shore Health Care Foundation coffers for its Travel Fund for Cancer Treatment program.
The program was started with a generous donation from 1010 Interiors in 2007. Since then 1010 Interiors has raised over $4,000 with its Tour of Homes fundraisers. Studio 61 of Grand Marais contributed another $1,305 with a Cut for the Cure fundraiser. Also contributing were Last Chance Gallery of Lutsen with a donation of $333 and the Grand Marais and West End Garden Clubs. Health Care Foundation Director Karl Hansen said the garden clubs have a “bit of a competition going” with the Travel Fund benefiting, with their donations of $228 and $410 respectively.
Cook County ATV Club Vice-President John McClure explained that the ATV Club participated in the 2008 Polaris American Cancer Society Challenge. Club members raised $1,000 in pledges to the American Cancer Society in a “Ride for the Cure” and were rewarded with a grant from Polaris. The club felt the money would be best used by the Health Care Foundation Travel Fund.
To date, thirteen patients have been assisted by the program, which provides $200 to cancer patients for travel expenses. Vouchers are available from the doctors at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic. More information is available by calling the clinic at (218) 387-2330.
Anyone can contribute to this worthwhile program by visiting the North Shore Health Care Foundation office in the lower level of the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic or by sending a donation to NSHCF, PO Box 454, Grand Marais MN 55604.
