I am writing in response to the article in the Cook County News Herald of October 10, 2015 about the October park board meeting. According to the article the primary discussion was about the seasonal sites on the front row of the Grand Marais Recreation Area (GMRA).
We happen to be on the front row. We fully appreciate the privilege we enjoy being there.
A policy change by the park board some years ago provided that the seasonal renters on the front row would retain their site as long as they wanted. However, once they gave them up their sites they would become daily rentals.
We expressed concern at that time that the board could simply raise our rental rates to a level we could not afford and we would be forced to give up our sites. We were assured this was not the intent.
Initially there were 15 seasonal sites on the front row. This past year there were seven. Next year there will only be six. Attrition is working.
We certainly understand the need for the city to maximize the profits from GMRA.
We ask that the park board consider the original intent of the front row policy and be fair and reasonable in setting the new rental rates.
