Atheists not convinced by poignant and emotional beliefs

Response to C. Flickinger’s letter of July 17.

There is no expectation to prove a negative, i.e. that which doesn’t exist. Evidence is needed to demonstrate that something does exist. Conventional religions (including Christianity) instead put faith in the stories of gods told by men, and the rituals passed down for hundreds and thousands of years. Theycan be very poignant and emotional. Atheists are those not convinced by this.

God’s knowledge and God’s love are not “two facts” as Dale McIntire implies. These are beliefs, not facts.

“Thejoy that we feel is eternal.” “All life is precious to God.” More non-facts! A belief stated as if it were a fact doesn’t make it real, true, nor a fact. Faith in a belief is no guarantee.

We live in an exciting, evolving, and awesome world. Be alert! Discovering the facts is both a challenge and a delight. We can discriminate between fact and belief, be open to new discoveries, yet be skeptical, and learn as we go along. Life is a great adventure!
