I’ve started the petition “Minnesota Department of Natural Resources: Stop the Minnesota Moose Hunt” and need your help to get it off the ground.
Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here’s the link: http:// www.change.org/petitions/minnesotadepartment of-natural-resources-stopthe minnesota-moose-hunt.
I have a moose head on the wall of my lodge at the end of the Gunflint Trail so it’s not that I’m against moose hunting. I am all for hunting if the moose herd population can handle it.
When I first moved to the end of the Gunflint Trail 20 years ago we would commonly see 10 or more moose on a trip to Grand Marais in the winter. Our record was 17 moose in the 56-mile stretch! On numerous trips this winter I haven’t seen a single moose. The most I have seen in one night is two!
Despite study after study and a drastic decline in the moose population the Minnesota DNR continues to offer a moose hunt in northeastern Minnesota. Aerial surveys estimate the herd at 4,230 in 2012. In 2006 the population was 8,840 moose. In December, the DNR listed the moose as a “species of concern” under the state’s Endangered Species Act but the DNR doesn’t see a good biological reason not to allow a moose hunt again this year.
I don’t see a good biological reason to allow another moose hunt in Minnesota until the population increases.
I love to see moose. These majestic, beautiful animals are Gunflint Trail icons. I get excited every time I see one and have seen the excited faces of thousands of people during my years as a resident and business owner on the Gunflint Trail.
I want to continue to see moose and see other people enjoy seeing moose. Please sign my petition. I want the Minnesota DNR to stop allowing hunters to harvest moose. I hope you do too.
