The Canadian government announced that while it will still require covid tests to re-enter the country, those tests won’t be the expensive molecular tests that run around $200.
Instead, the government will accept a negative rapid antigen test. These tests aren’t as reliable as PCR tests, can be done in minutes, and run around $40.
Rapid Antigen tests must be lab-administrated and taken one day before returning to Canada.
The U.S opened its borders to fully vaccinated Canadians on November 8, 2021.
This move is slowly cracking the door open for Canadians to frequent the U.S. for nonessential travel.
On December 1, 2021, Canadians were approved to make short trips across the border, 72 hours or less, without proving they had passed a molecular COVID-19 test.
However, with the spread of the Omnicron variant, all of that changed December 20, 2021, when nonessential travelers once again had to show proof of a pre-arrival negative molecular COVID-19 test to gain entry back into the country.
Both Canada and the U.S. began travel restrictions for nonessential travelers in March 2020. Those traveler restrictions included family members separated by the border and shoppers, tourists, cabin owners, hunters, and anglers.
