Art ’Round Town is sponsoring a gala art show/fundraiser for public art at the Johnson Heritage Post during Presidents’ Weekend, Feb. 14-17. Local artists are donating original 12-inch by 12-inch works, which will be available for a donation of $100 each, and there will be a number of miscellaneous pieces as well (pottery, wind chimes, jewelry, etc.).
The grand opening from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 will be open to the public, and the A’RT Committee encourages everyone to attend, whether to indulge in a variety of hors d’oeuvres, sip a glass of wine, revel in live jazz by Mike DeBevec (piano) and Eric Hahn (sax), or to select artwork to enhance your home.
This year’s funds will be combined with previous “Save the Mural” fundraising efforts related to the student/artist created mural that was dismantled with the reconstruction of the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op in 2013. Photos of the old four-season mural now hang in the new co-op building. There are still plans to incorporate pieces of the old mural in some other work of art in the community.
The money raised from the A’RT event will be used to support a new student/artist generated mosaic mural that will appear next summer on the west wall of Johnson’s Grocery.
Mosaic artists Karen Neal and Jeanne Wright are working with Jana Larson’s fourth graders and Mary MacDonald’s 4th period high school art class to design and produce this new project.
Organizers have raised $2,500 so far. It is anticipated that the entire project will cost around $9,000. One of the mural committee members, Ann Mershon, said grants are being sought, however, any financial donations would be welcome.
